Submit blood type documentation and 6 blood pressure readings. The Donor Coordinator at the transplant center will provide detailed information as to how to collect and report this information.
3. In Depth Health Assessment
Interested donors will spend two (2) days having their health thoroughly evaluated with emphasis on the kidneys. Interested donors will be evaluated in the Transplant Clinic as outpatients. During the evaluation, individuals will undergo a complete medical history and physical exam. A series of blood and urine tests will be performed to measure selected body chemistries. X-rays are obtained to examine chest and kidney health. A test is performed to measure the function of the kidneys by determining their ability to excrete an isotope injected into the blood. Depending on age and medical history, some individuals may undergo additional tests to measure respiratory and cardiovascular health.
Interested donors will also be interviewed by several consultants, including a transplant surgeon, transplant nephrologist, psychiatrist, and social worker. Depending on the results of the previously performed exams, some individuals may also be asked to consult with other specialists, such as a cardiologist or gastroenterologist. At every stage of the donor evaluation process, members of the Transplant Team are also available to answer medical questions that potential donors have about donation.
